Welcome to 1st Hexham

The 1st Hexham Scout Group is based in the market town of Hexham in Northumberland. We are approximately 20 miles from the City of Newcastle upon Tyne. Our headquarters is situated at Maidens Walk in the East end of the town behind Hexham hospital & provides fantastic facilities for young people to enjoy Scouting.

The Group has three sections comprising Beaver Scouts, Cub scouts and Scouts, covering an age range of 6 years to 14 years.

We are also now delighted to  host the Lookwide Explorer Unit, which is run by the District but partnered with our Group at the Lookwide Centre. We are always needing more adults prepared to join the Group & get involved in supporting our young people, so why not browse our website & see what we can offer.

At 1st Hexham we are the Adventure Specialists (Click to see our Video) & apart from the satisfaction of getting involved, it is also great fun. As as an adult in scouting, you also get the chance to participate in many of our scouting activities !  We also have an amazing track record of International trips.

The aims of our Group are simple, to provide your child with the best possible Scouting experience.

Welcome to the website of the 1st Hexham Scout Group

The Group can trace its beginnings back to 1928 & has been providing Scouting in the town for young people ever since.

In 1998 it became increasingly apparent that we needed a forward thinking vision for our headquarters. Our old wooden hut was showing serious signs of wear & tear & was becoming increasingly more expensive to repair and maintain.

The decision was therefore taken to explore the possibility of a new headquarters on the site. For Four years a dedicated project team worked to bring the dream to a reality,

culminating in 2001 with a National Lottery grant of £123,000. The centre was named "Lookwide" after the site of the World's first official Scout camp, which took place in our District in 1908.

The Centre was officially opened in July 2002 & it was a very proud day for the Scout Group. Today the centre is well used by the Scout Group & is also available for a wide variety of Community functions

outside of Scout Group use. The Centre has also proved to be a popular venue for sleepovers & indoor weekends by visiting Scout Groups wanting to experience the splendour of Hexham & the stunning Northumberland countryside.

The Centre is ideally situated just 100 yards from Hexham bus station & is a modern brick built building that is fully centrally heated.

Facilities also include a large main hall with a 5 metre indoor Climbing wall, full toilet & shower facilities including disabled facilities, kitchen, leaders lounge & a small bunk room with three beds.

We also have a portable .177 air rifle range which can be put up in the garage which houses the Group minibus.

For details on how you can book our headquarters please visit the Lookwide Centre section of the website.

The Centre & the land around it are owned and run entirely by the 1st Hexham Scout Group.
